Description:

Summer Internship Opportunity

Summer, 2025

Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Epidemiology Center (GLITEC)

A program of Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council, Inc. (GLITC)

About GLITC and GLITEC

Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council, Inc. (GLITC) is a consortium of federally recognized Indian Tribes in Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. GLITC is a nonprofit corporation that serves Tribes by administering grant-funded programs directly or through sub-grants. GLITC programs range from family health and elder services to vocational rehabilitation and economic development. The mission of GLITC is to enhance the quality of life for all Native people.

Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Epidemiology Center (GLITEC) is a program of GLITC. Since 1996, GLITEC has served the 34 federally recognized Tribes, four urban Indian communities, and three Indian Health Service (IHS) service units within the Bemidji IHS Area (Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Chicago).

The mission of GLITEC is to support Tribal communities in their efforts to improve health by assisting with data needs through partnership development, community-based research, education, and technical assistance. GLITEC staff supports American Indian/Alaska Native communities in their efforts to improve the health of their people by:

  • Partnering directly with communities.
  • Producing publicly available resources.
  • Educating on local, state, and national levels to improve data.

Why choose an internship with GLITEC?

A GLITEC internship is a unique opportunity to engage in public health practice in rural, underserved, and culturally varied communities that experience disparate health, education, and economic conditions. To help create a successful work experience, GLITEC offers learning opportunities about the history of colonization and its effect on American Indian/Alaska Native communities and helps interns understand the importance of building and maintaining trust with Tribal communities.

Project Opportunities

GLITEC is seeking a total of two (2) interns this summer, to be placed in one of the locations listed. Projects available to interns vary depending on student interest, academic program requirements, and staff availability. GLITEC intern projects areas could include:

  • HIV prevention promotional activities
  • Tribal community health assessment (data analysis and report writing)
  • Social Determinants of Health report
  • Collecting drinking water samples

Intern Requirements and Qualifications

Undergraduate and graduate master’s-level public health students may submit applications for their internship, field placement, and/or master’s project.

A GLITEC internship requires an awareness and keen appreciation of Native traditions, customs, and socioeconomic needs. Qualified applicants must always demonstrate the ability to work effectively with contacts at Native organizations. This requires humility, respect, courtesy, open-mindedness, trustworthiness, discretion, resourcefulness, and good judgment in handling functions of a sensitive nature while continuing to pursue our mission.

Interns may have day trips and overnight travel throughout Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin as part of the internship to help build relationships with the Tribal communities we serve; work travel expenses are reimbursable. Internships are expected to begin in May 2025 and conclude in September 2025. Actual start and end dates are flexible. Interns are expected to work 40 hours per week for approximately ten-twelve weeks at $19.00 - $20.00 per hour based on qualifications. This is an office position. This is not a remote position.
