THE POSITION The Crime Analyst Technician is a non-sworn civilian classification, which does not require Peace Officer status, training or responsibility. Individuals in this classification are uniformed members of the Sheriff's Department and are assigned to work field operation crime scenes and work under the supervision of the Property and Evidence/Identification Unit Manager. The Crime Analyst Technician is responsible for collecting, photographing, lifting and processing fingerprints, as well as many other crime scene related tasks. This position requires ongoing training and incumbents are expected to obtain certification through the International Association for Identification.
The individual assigned to field services operates at headquarters, in the field and at various custodial facilities. The incumbent is expected to collect and preserve evidence used in the prosecution of criminals; operate photographic equipment; identify persons through fingerprints; prepare and identify criminal identification records; be computer literate; and perform other duties as assigned. Incumbents will work outdoors in all types of weather and various terrains. The incumbent may work around decomposing bodies, biohazards and scenes where violent crimes have occurred. Incumbents may be assigned to work ten-hour shifts.
Unless otherwise provided, this position is part of the Classified Service of the County and is assigned to the Technical Services bargaining unit for labor relations purposes.
Individuals who are in a full-time classified position are required to serve a twelve-month probationary period, which may be extended an additional six months for a total of eighteen months. The probationary period does not apply to unclassified positions.
Incumbents are subject to overtime, standby, callback, weekend, holiday and shift assignments as identified in their MOU (Memorandum of Understanding).

Typical Tasks
- Collect, preserve, photograph, identify and record evidence;
- Lift and process fingerprints, both latent and rolled;
- Make latent fingerprint and palm print comparisons;
- Develop and print photographic material;
- Enter and retrieve data using computer terminals and printers;
- Perform general clerical work, including typing, filing and answer the phone;
- Testify in court as a fingerprint expert;
- Process crime scenes and collect and preserve evidence;
- Videotape and/or photograph crime scenes;
- Photograph autopsies;
- Operate a police radio or digital terminal to transmit and receive messages from like equipped vehicles or stations;
- Explain in understandable terms the policies and procedures of the Sheriff's Department;
- Combine and put to use chemical compounds used in the locating, collecting and processing of evidence;
- Contact with deceased bodies on a regular basis;
- Perform fingerprint comparisons using technology;
- Operate special equipment designed to locate and collect evidence; and
- Relieve sworn personnel by handling non-hazardous crime scene analysis (burglaries, etc.) where there are no suspects at the call location.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education/Experience)
KNOWLEDGE - Photography and techniques of photo development and fingerprinting;
- Basic organization and functions of a law enforcement agency;
- General office practices, including the operation of standard office equipment and computer terminals;
- Record keeping principles;
- Correct English usage, spelling and punctuation;
- Rules of evidence;
- Basic interviewing methods and techniques;
- Geography of Stanislaus County; and
- Civil law and procedures.
SKILLS/ABILITIES - Speak and write clearly and effectively;
- Learn and apply departmental policies and procedures;

- Develop rapport and obtain cooperation from crime victims, witnesses and the general public;
- Maintain accurate and concise records and reports;

- Sketch charts, graphs and diagrams;
- Type at a speed of 25 WPM (net corrected);
- Lift objects weighing up to 30 pounds;
- Learn to operate a computer terminal and printer; and
- Testify in court as a fingerprint expert.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE Pattern I - High school graduate or General Educational Development (GED) equivalency; AND
- Two (2) years of full time work experience involving public contact in a law enforcement setting comparable to a Stanislaus County Community Service Officer; AND
- Possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License.
Pattern II - High school graduate or General Educational Development (GED) equivalency; AND
- One (1) year of full time work experience comparable to a Stanislaus County Forensic Autopsy Technician; AND
- Possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License.
Pattern III - Associate’s degree or higher in Forensic Science, Criminology, or Criminal Justice; AND
- Six (6) months full time experience in a law enforcement setting; AND
- Possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License.

This is a Veterans' Preference Program eligible job classification. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS In addition to the minimum qualifications, applicant screening will focus on the following desirable qualifications. - A typing certificate, within 4 years, of 25 WPM (net corrected) from any temporary agency or comparable institute. The certificate must be a three to five minute timed test OR verification of data entry ability at a speed of not less than 7,000 strokes per hour (accurately and skillfully).
County employees who currently hold a position which required a typing certificate of at least 25 WPM (net corrected) to qualify are not required to submit a typing certificate.

EXAMINATION PROCESS Most County recruitments consists of the steps detailed below and are governed by Merit Principles. The examination process ensures that all applicants are given the same opportunity to gain employment within Stanislaus County.

- Written Examination. Applicants will be invited to participate in a written exam that tests knowledge for the position.
- Scenario/Oral Examination-Scored: Candidates will be required to pass both the scenario and oral examination with a minimum score of 70% in order to continue in the recruitment process. Candidate scores for the scenario and oral examination are averaged and will determine the candidates overall score.
- Eligible Lists . Candidates who pass the examination will be placed on an eligible list for that classification. Eligible lists are effective for six months, but may be extended up to eighteen months.
