Purpose Job Description To provide comprehensive preventative healthcare to children (neonates to adolescents), in a culturally and ethnically sensitive environment. Utilizing a collaborative approach with patients, parents/guardians and other members of the interdisciplinary team in defining and meeting the healthcare needs and goals of patients, families and community.
Specific Duties And Responsibilities The Staff Nurse in the Pediatric Office Practice setting is charged with and responsible for:
- Utilizes 2 patient identifiers during every patient encounter; name and date of birth.
- Performs comprehensive assessment of patients including vaccination status, growth and development milestones
- Involves the patient, parent(s)/guardian(s) in care and education, as applicable.
- Provides age appropriate care to newborn, infant, toddler, pre-schooler, school-age, adolescent, and young adults.
- Maintains access to and routinely reviews immunization record of assigned patients by utilizing City Immunization Registry (CIR).
- Exhibits knowledge in or knows how to access recommended vaccination schedule for the pediatric population.
- Assists with providing follow-up with abnormal Newborn Screening results, lead level results and hearing screening with documentation of patient outreach efforts.
- Triages pediatric patient and categorizes patient based on chief complaint(s), nursing assessment and collaborates with physician on patient management and disposition.
- Assesses and monitors patient’s condition and initiates appropriate nursing intervention(s).
- Complies with the safe administration of medications by utilizing bar code medication administration (BCMA).
- Complies with medication management by ensuring security of medications.
- In collaboration with other members of the interdisciplinary team, ensures that patients are recalled as needed for abnormal test results and broken appointments.
- Recognizes emergency situations and acts effectively according to protocols; assumes personal responsibility for safe work habits and patient safety; utilizes/enforces standard precautions.
- Maintains clinical competency through participation in continuing education, attendance at mandatory classes i.e. BLS, PALS, NRP, etc.
- Participates in performance improvement and regulatory activities.
- Assumes the duties of charge nurse and delegates assignment to staff based on knowledge and expertise.
- Carries out infection control protocol.
- Identifies and escalates issues in a timely manner to supervisory personnel.
Minimum Qualifications - A valid New York State license and current registration to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse in New York State; and
- Holds, or obtains through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).
Special Note For assignments in Post-Acute Care ONLY, individuals meeting the following criteria may also be considered for appointment: Graduation from a nursing education program registered by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) as licensure qualifying for Registered Professional Nurse (RN) and has applied for licensure as an RN. These unlicensed individuals may be employed to practice under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN for up to 90 days immediately following graduation pending receipt of a limited permit, which selected candidates must apply for and receive within the same 90-day period. Once a limited permit is received, individuals can practice nursing, under the immediate and personal supervision of a NYS licensed, currently registered, RN at a NYC Health + Hospitals health care setting for up to one (1) year from the date of issuance of the limited permit. In addition, must hold or obtain through facility orientation, a valid and current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA).

Proficient in electronic medical records, specifically EPIC
