Job Description

DIRECTV is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Principal System Engineer to lead our technical team in designing and developing end-to-end solutions. This role will be responsible for overseeing the entire system lifecycle, from conceptualization to decommissioning, while managing dependencies and cross-team impacts. The ideal candidate will be an expert in system engineering principles, with a proven track record of delivering complex projects, mentoring junior team members, and working closely with business partners in the Customer Payment and Collections space. This position requires a strategic thinker who can balance short-term sprint goals with long-term, multi-PI (Program Increment) initiatives.

This position as an individual contributor SME will be working in a highly active space in order to provide focus, thought leadership, functional expertise, technical expertise, and overall direction. This individual will work closely with the IT Application, Architecture, and Program teams, along with Finance teams to drive quality and manage expectations with key stakeholders.

Here's what you'll do:

  • Lead the design and development of end-to-end solutions, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and best practices.
  • Develop and implement operationalization strategies and lifecycle planning for systems, including deployment and decommissioning processes.
  • Manage dependencies and cross-team impacts, fostering collaboration across functional areas.
  • Actively participate in cross-functional initiatives to promote best practices and educate peers on system engineering principles.
  • Plan and organize work for both short-term (sprint-to-sprint) and long-term (multiple PI) initiatives, ensuring alignment with strategic objectives.
  • Mentor junior team members on the Scrum team and functional team, providing guidance on technical approaches and best practices.
  • Identify and manage risks associated with system development and implementation, escalating issues to leadership when necessary.
  • Collaborate with product owners and stakeholders to define and prioritize system requirements and features.
  • Conduct technical reviews and provide expert input on system architecture and design decisions.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends, incorporating new approaches as appropriate.
  • Develop and maintain system documentation, including architecture diagrams, technical specifications, and operational procedures.
  • Participate in capacity planning and resource allocation to ensure efficient team performance.

Here's what you'll need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or related field preferred; Master's degree a plus.
  • 3 – 5+ years of experience in systems engineering, with a proven track record of leading complex projects.
  • Expert knowledge of system design principles, software development methodologies, and best practices.
  • Strong understanding of Agile/Scrum methodologies and experience working in a PI (Program Increment) planning environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and mentor technical teams, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to analyze complex systems and propose effective solutions.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across diverse teams and stakeholders.
  • Experience with cloud technologies (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and containerization platforms (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Proficiency in one or more programming languages (e.g., Java, Python, C++) and familiarity with DevOps practices.
  • Knowledge of system security principles and experience implementing secure system designs.
  • Ability to balance technical depth with a broad understanding of system integration and interdependencies.
  • Experience with performance tuning, capacity planning, and scalability considerations for large-scale systems.
  • Familiarity with relevant industry standards and regulations (e.g., ISO, CMMI, ITIL).
  • May require a background check due to job duties requiring routine access to DIRECTV and DIRECTV customer’s proprietary data. Qualified applicants with arrest and conviction will be considered for employment in accordance with local ordinances and state law.

This role requires, but is not limited to, 5% travel.
