Job Description: Child Care Worker
General Function
Child Care Workers create a safe and nurturing home environment for residents and are responsible for their physical wellbeing and social development. This position is part time for the overnight care of the children.
Primary Responsibilities:
Documentation/ paperwork: Maintain on-shift documentation in resident's folders, as well as documentation in all other assigned areas, pertaining to residents. Paperwork must be completed before the end of each shift. Sign time sheet, daily log and staff communication log on a daily basis. Keep accurate time sheets and turn in at appropriate times for payroll purposes.
Resident Supervision: Provide a safe and nurturing environment for all Safe Harbor residents. This is done through supervision of all activities such as homework, outings, mealtime, free time, wake up and bedtime. The activities that a Child Care Worker monitors will be determined by the shift that they are working. Complete room checks during each shift and room searches as required.
Cooking/Housecleaning: Each Child Care Worker is responsible for cooking and house cleaning duties that arise on their shift. These duties will either be assigned by the House Manager or Program Director or her/his designee. Each staff person will be provided with information and training about these duties.
Transportation: Provided resident transportation to and from school, to medical appointments and various activities such as community functions, and shopping. This duty will be assigned by the Program Director (PD) or his/her designee. Child Care Workers will ONLY transport residents in the Safe Harbor Van. Repairs must be reported to the Administrative Assistant and staff must complete a repair request form. Never leave the gas tank less one-quarter full. Record all vehicle mileage on vehicle log in the van. Turn in fuel receipts to Administrative Assistant.
Intakes/Discharges: ONLY the Executive Director or Program Director can accept or deny potential residents. If ED or PD is not available complete the intake form and contact the on-call supervisor. Complete all necessary paperwork before leaving your shift. If there has been a discharge make sure the room/bedding is cleaned and ready for next resident. Medications and refills should be documented and reported to the shift supervisor and/or the PD.
Resident Medication: Keep all medications in the designated locked cabinet. Supervise resident's medication as trained and as outlined in the Medication Binder. Document and report to the ED or PD any need for medication refills, new prescriptions, etc., as soon as possible.
Communication: Communicate and update other staff during shift changes regarding resident changes, needs, and behaviors. Immediately report to the supervisor any inappropriate behavior by a staff member or a resident. Any abuse by anyone must be reported. All inappropriate behaviors must be documented before the end of each shift.
Related Duties: Work with other staff members to share and complete paperwork for residents. Attend staff meetings and training. Participate in training and staff development activities. Perform all other duties as assigned by the Program Director or designee.
Special Requirements:
Light lifting up to 25 pounds.
Walking up and down stairs frequently.
Walking up to several miles (accompanying residents on field trips, outings)
Reaching involved in assigned cleaning
Driving a 12-16 passenger van
Obtain and maintain Infant CPR and First Aid certifications.
Qualifications:
Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent
Two years of experience in childcare, education, social services, or related field
Must be at least 26 years of age (state child care licensing requirement)
Pass all necessary background and drug tests
Reports to: Shelter Program Director
