Medical Assistant Supervisor

JOB DESCRIPTION

Summary/Objective:
The Medical Assistant Supervisor is responsible for performing a variety of duties working collaboratively with the Primary Care and/or MAT (Medication Assistant Treatment) provider and office manager/supervisors. The MA Supervisor participates in the direct and indirect care of patients, health maintenance, patient instruction, collaborative planning and rehabilitation as within scope of practice and consistent with their education and training. The Medical Assistant Supervisor may be present in secure medication storage areas and are allowed incidental access to medications. Developing relationships with patients, families and colleagues, the Lead MA functions as an interdisciplinary team member who provides quality patient care and contributes toward the attainment of important goals for the patient, the practice and the organization. The MA Supervisor will also serve as a resource and mentor to the other Medical Assistants in the practice.

Essential Functions

  1. ­­Demonstrates true engagement and enthusiasm to contribute toward the care delivery needs for patients and families.
  2. Promotes an inclusive environment supportive of patient and family centered care for a diverse community.
  3. Accepts assignments for patient care within the scope of his/her preparation and within current standards of practice.
  4. In conjunction with the primary care team members, participates in the gathering of data that contributes to the assessment, planning, and evaluation of care delivered.
  5. Collaborates as a member of the health care team, contributing toward a supportive and therapeutic environment that promotes the attainment of patient goals that are specific, measurable, action-oriented, realistic and timely.
  6. Accurately obtains vital signs, elicits information about the patient’s basic health status, administers relevant care within scope of practice and as directed by the provider, and documents as appropriate in the electronic health record.
  7. Performs routine tests that may include but is not limited to: vital signs, EKGs, and the collection of specimens for laboratory testing and point of care.
  8. Participates in team-based care and patient education initiatives to support the health and wellness of patients.
  9. Participates in organizational and unit-based quality improvement initiatives and compliance readiness.
  10. Participates in prescription management tasks including pending of new prescriptions and renewals requiring provider approval.
  11. Performs a variety of tasks, including those that may be facilitated by administrative staff, which have an effect on the overall operations of Adult Medicine. These include patient workflow, stocking of rooms, ordering supplies, scheduling tasks and all other duties as assigned.
  12. Appropriately utilizes organizational resources including management of time, supplies, equipment and other assets.
  13. Administrative Duties and Responsibilities:
    1. In conjunction with the Nurse Manager, oversees the daily activities of the MA’s; assigns tasks; oversees flow; responsible for the judgment of room rotations.
    2. Monitor vacation and sick time; arrange coverage as appropriate.
    3. May assist manager with interviewing candidates, orienting and training of new or current staff.
    4. Provides functional guidance to other MA’s.
    5. May provide feedback and input for evaluating performance.
  14. Other duties as assigned.

Competencies

  1. Familiar with medical home model, chronic care management, outpatient substance abuse/mental health.
  2. Bilingual skills a plus.
  3. Team-oriented with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  4. Self-starter with ability to take initiative.

Work Environment
This job operates in a clinical office environment.

Physical Demands

Duties may require standing and walking, or sitting for long periods of time.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
The Health Center is open Monday through Friday, 8 am to 7 pm, Saturdays 8 am to 2 pm. Hours vary according to shift assigned. Weekend, holiday and evening responsibilities will occur in rotation.

Required Education and Experience

  1. High School diploma and/or equivalent required.
  2. Certificate of completion of Medical Assistant Program required. Must obtain Basic Life Support Certification within 90 days of hire.
  3. Minimum of one year of experience working as a Medical Assistant preferred.
