Job Summary: Healthcare Planner


This is a hybrid position with both in office as well as remote work options. The position can be located at any of NK Architects office locations; 95 Washington Street, Morristown NJ, The Woolworth Building, 233 Broadway, Suite 2150, New York, NY or Philadelphia, PA

We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated healthcare planner to join our integrated team of design professionals. The selected candidate will combine creativity and technical knowledge to design and lead teams in the creation of innovative healthcare spaces that focus on optimized operations and user experience. This candidate will collaborate with the project team and work closely with project managers and principals of the firm in all NK offices. The projects will span all geographies (NY, NJ & PA). The ideal candidate will leverage experience and a broad skill set to drive projects from conception through to build.

Healthcare predominates in our marketplace, and our clients mandate that NK staff who conduct business with and site visits to healthcare providers be vaccinated. As such, this position can only be fully executed by vaccinated individuals. Proof of vaccination may in future be a requirement for prospective hires.

Candidate Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Lead in the conceptual design of complex healthcare projects (medical centers, medical office buildings, hospitals, outpatient clinics, surgery centers, community health centers, etc.) by establishing planning principles.
  • Translate client operational model into architectural design/medical plan.
  • Lead and facilitate clinical user group meetings; actively generate solutions in real time.
  • Lead team members in creating and coordinating architectural documentation that supports planning concepts.
  • Review of planning and design through the production and implementation documentation process to ensure continuity of the design intent.
  • Apply governing regulatory codes and hospital licensing standards and validate that those requirements are met.
  • Coordinate or prepare drawings and designs in accordance with NK standards, best practice, and quality expectations.
  • Participate in and may lead team meetings to discuss project issues, technical issues, and coordination with other disciplines.
  • Maintain detailed documentation of client meetings pertaining to clinical planning and medical equipment client decisions.
  • May be responsible for preparing meeting minutes and other appropriate documents for consultant coordination meetings.
  • Work with project team to deliver a project on defined budget requirements.
  • Understand research methodology and integrates research into practice.
  • Actively support firmwide sustainability and resilience goals, guiding clients and project teams toward multi-benefit sustainable and resilient design solutions
Required Skills/Abilities
  • In depth understanding of healthcare facilities from master planning and programming to small interior renovations.
  • Advanced knowledge of current healthcare planning and programming concepts including patient safety, evidence-based design principles, and general industry benchmarks.
  • Ability to lead clinical user meetings for needs assessment to prepare functional and space programs.
  • Ability to lead clinical user meetings during all phases of design. Guide/manage user expectations and think of real time solution that reinforce user needs.
  • Understanding of multiple service line operations and how the plan impacts use of space.
  • In depth understanding of the medical equipment planning process and experience working with medical equipment planners
  • Experience with developing thought leadership publications and participating in speaking engagements.
  • Desire to mentor and cultivate an interest in healthcare planning within the team and practice area.
  • Understands architectural building systems, building codes and accessibility guidelines.
  • Flexibility to focus on concurrent projects in various stages of development in all office locations (NJ, NY,PA) and be willing to work in these offices on occasion.
  • Forward focused on the vision for healthcare planning in the future
  • Experience with state DOH (NY, NJ, PA) certificate of needs process and regulatory process.
  • Thorough knowledge of healthcare related codes and standards, including FGI.
  • Must have the ability to maintain existing client relationships and build new client relationships through successful project delivery.
  • Work with marketing and business development teams to support healthcare strategic goals.
  • Excellent organizational skills, time management skills and attention to detail
Education, Certifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in architecture or a related field from an accredited school
  • Licensed or working towards licensure
  • 15+ years of related experience as a Medical Planner
  • Revit user a plus
  • ACHA Certification preferred
  • CHID certification a plus
  • LEAN, EDAC certification a plus
  • LEED AP or WELL certified a plus
  • Knowledge of Newforma, Deltek Vision or Vantagepoint a plus
  • Familiar with Adobe Creative Suite and Bluebeam Revu
  • Familiar with Microsoft office; Teams, Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Healthcare portfolio which includes concept level and master plans
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
