About The Bishop's School
Founded in 1909 and affiliated with the Episcopal Church, The Bishop's School is an independent, all gender college-preparatory day school for 800 students in grades six through twelve located on a historic campus in the heart of La Jolla, just 10 miles north of downtown San Diego. With a student-teacher ratio of approximately 9 to 1, Bishop's is known for academic, artistic, and athletic excellence while celebrating character development, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. Last year's applicant pool drew from 72 zip codes and 168 middle and high schools throughout San Diego County and beyond. Fifty-one percent of the student population self-identify as students of color. Additionally, over $4 million in need-based grants is awarded annually.
The Bishop's School is looking for qualified Head Coaches and Assistant Coaches for our Varsity, JV, and Middle School teams.
Sports currently offered at The Bishop's School in various seasons and team settings include: Football, Cross country, Flag Football, Lacrosse, Volleyball, Basketball, Field Hockey, Soccer, Softball, Baseball, Tennis, Track, Water Polo, Equestrian, Sailing, Surf, Swimming, Golf. Bishop's coaches instruct and work with athletes to prepare them for competition. Coaches help athletes to play their best individually and as a team while instilling the School's mission and values. They are experts on the rules, strategies, and techniques of their sports. Coaches must also know about sports equipment, physical fitness and safety.
Anticipated Base Compensation Depending on Experience: $19 - $30/hour
Qualifications:
Proven job experience as a coach or experience in working with students 6-12 grades. Strong ability to adhere to regulations and standards. Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills. Excellent organizational and problem solving ability. Ability to inspire and motivate.
Preferred Certifications:
- NFHS Fundamentals of Coaching
- First Aid and CPR Training and certification
- NFHS Sudden Cardiac Arrest
- NFHS Concussion Training
- NFHS Heat Illness Training
- USA Football Heads Up Training (Football coaches only)
Skills & Abilities:
- Dedicated work ethic: proactive, responsible, reliable and attentive to deadlines.
- Knowledge of applicable team or individual sports and playing rules.
- Demonstrated competitive coaching skills in area of sporting specialty.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with student-athletes and families.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of strengthening and conditioning methods and techniques
- Motivated, highly organized, and a self-directed individual who can effectively multitask and handle a variety of matters independently in a professional, trustworthy and mature manner with tact, diplomacy, and appropriate judgment.
- Ability to actively collaborate with all School constituencies.
- Intermediate proficiency with Google Workspace and Microsoft Office, and a willingness to become proficient in new programs, learning management systems, collaboration and productivity apps as needed.
- Embrace the special needs and requirements associated with an academic calendar and schedule which may necessitate fluctuations in workdays and hours.
- Strong advocate of the School's mission and school values of integrity, compassion, inclusion, intellect, excellence and justice.
- Proactively support the athletics department and anticipate the needs of all constituencies.
Essential Functions and Specific Duties:
- Knowledge of applicable team or individual sports and playing rules.
- Ability to organize and lead daily practices.
- Demonstrated competitive coaching skills in area of sporting specialty.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with student-athletes.
- Knowledge of strength and conditioning methods and techniques.
- Ability to transport students in a school vehicle if necessary.
- Communicate with student athletes to understand their goals and ambitions.
- Assess the strengths of individual athletes and teach them to use them effectively and improve their skills overall.
- Monitor and evaluate progress of student athletes.
- Keep records and documentation of and prepare appropriate reports.

- Stay up to date on industry standards, trends, developments and legal updates.
- Make timely and ethical decisions both systematically and under pressure.
